Your Cheat Sheet for Fall Fashion

Layers, Pumpkin Lattes and Scenic Long Drives.

Okay so it might still feel warm in most regions, but you can definitely feel the crisp colder season approaching. And, while pumpkin lattes, cinnamon buns and beautiful sceneries are some of my more favorite things about Fall, I love the transitioning stage of fashion during this time of the year too.

Maybe it’s because back to school was such a big deal when I was a child but I feel like the move to fall is the biggest fashion move of the year.

So as I planned to update my own wardrobe, scouring through Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Stylecaster, I decided to create a cheat sheet to make it easy.  Yes break out the old, a lot is transitional and as for the new, if you pick one thing in each category below, no matter how inexpensive, you’ll be set for fall!

Fabrics!  Velvet and fur (fake of course for me) is back in season. While velvet has quite a lot of wearable options for everyday, I always find fur a bit too drastic for during the day. But this time, it’s not your usual brightly colored, long fur, belted coats. No, this time it’s more trimmed and the colors are beautifully spring-like! Even the plain old black and white colors have such gorgeous patterns; it feels like a must-have for this season’s wardrobe!

For a more festive night out, I loved the way designers used lace. The colors used were darker – black – and gave a beautiful romantic yet pretty feel to the outfits.

Style. I am not into the whole Renaissance look with puffy sleeves, though I do like minimal ruffles on blouses, it adds a bit of a romantic look. One trend that I loved but might be tough to pull off, is the 80s power style one shoulder tops and those extra long sleeve tops. If you are looking for something less feminine, the pinstripe suits are back in style too! And oh no, they are not your “dad-kinda” pinstripes. They are gorgeous with just the right touch of feminine!

Footwear. Yes, it’s 80 degrees out but I am breaking out my boots very soon.  I go from flip flips to boots in a flash. I am loving the shoe-boot selections this fall and to my surprise guess who has some cool ones: Timberland – not kidding check out the Denette Buckle Boot, or the Glancy and tell me you’re not ready for fall.

Outerwear.  Since it’s still warm, you don’t really need to layer much and the designer’s way of getting through it was capelets. They look modern, chic and they offer minimal coziness, appropriate enough for the changing weather. They look like the cutest little sweater poncho you’ve ever seen and I’m obsessing over them!

As we transition to the colder season, that brings us to the amazing variety of overcoats. There is something trendy for almost everyone this season. On trend are these classic double-breasted U.S. Military overcoats, muted plaid overcoats and my personal favorite, leather coats in striking colors like red or purple!

Accessories. On the accessories front, I am absolutely digging the choker trend. And, it’s not your 70s thin, velvet choker that’s back in style. Designers have brought back statement chokers, gilded or your good old black one with a little embellishment.

Either way, they add the perfect oomph to the otherwise rather dull colored Fall dresses. You may need to get two of those! :)

Happy Fall!   ~ Jill
